First graders started off the year with Norton Juster's
Neville, a story of a boy who thinks of a clever way to make friends in his new neighborhood. We then jumped into an author study of Cynthia Rylant, reading one each from four different series:
Poppleton,
Mr. Putter and Tabby,
Henry and Mudge, and
Annie and Snowball. Many girls chose to read other books in the series. We all became experts in Cynthia Rylant stories!
We then continued with a couple of books in which the main character seems to not fit in and then finds his or her way. In Alicia Potter's
Fritz Danced the Fandango, an open-minded nimble-hooved mountain goat befriends Gerhard, the glockenspiel-playing dog, and Liesl, the yodeling sheep. In Gemma Merino's
The Crocodile Who Didn't Like Water, we met a young crocodile who, unlike his siblings, doesn't like water. He finds his true self when he sneezes...and breathes fire.
Next up was
Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock. Ask your daughter how the sneaky spider tricked his friends and how they got him back. Did he learn his lesson?
